"Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first a patron, the last a punisher. Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries BY A GOVERNMENT, which we might expect in a country WITHOUT GOVERNMENT, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer." - Thomas Paine, Common Sense
"Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain." - Frédéric Bastiat, The Law
I disagree that society is always beneficial. Society can can come up with very detrimental stuff and will defend it vigorously. Other wise I have no issue with what you wrote.
Believe what you want- and let me do the same- but if you're reading the same book I read, I don't care much for either side.
One's full of jerks and the other is just pathetic.
And if, when I die, I get thrown into some kind of Big Fire Below, I had better see at least one chimpanzee in there, or that will only raise more questions.
There are several studies showing that chimpanzees (which are APES, not monkeys) have emotions, family bonds, even traditions unique to certain groups! They have cultures, for crying out loud! If that doesn't make them just as self-aware as we are... if that doesn't mean they have "souls," then logic has officially abandoned this universe.
I just can't.
