Growing up in the early days of the internet, I was enthralled with Snopes.com and would regularly peruse its pages reading up on urban legends and other quaint and curious volumes of forgotten internet lore.
To this day, urban legends still enthrall me. They have that eerie quality to them where you know in the back of your head that it's all made-up nonsense, but the overall plausibility of the story makes you second-guess as to whether or not it's real.
Which, of course, it was only fortunate that Snopes and its crack team of expert fact-checkers were there to discern these modern myths and determine whether they were fact or fiction.
Most were false. Others were true. And yet the most eerily creepy ones were always those rated undetermined.
All this month, I'll be sharing some of my favorite urban legends, all courtesy of Snopes.
Let's start with a classic: "The Roommate's Death".
In this cautionary tale, we have a college girl who hears strange noises coming outside her dorm late one night, only to discover too little too late it was her murdered roommate.
These two girls in Corbin had stayed late over Christmas vacation. One of them had to wait for a later train, and the other wanted to go to a fraternity party given that night of vacation. The dorm assistant was in her room — sacked out. They waited and waited for the intercom, and then they heard this knocking and knocking outside in front of the dorm. So the girl thought it was her date and she went down. But she didn't come back and she didn't come back. So real late that night this other girl heard a scratching and gasping down the hall. She couldn't lock the door, so she locked herself in the closet. In the morning she let herself out and her roommate had had her throat cut, and if the other girl had opened to door earlier, she would have been saved. As a special extra, this story was featured on the TLC show Mostly True Stories, which provided live-action dramatizations of such urban legends along with commentary and analysis.
Here's the segment about this urban legend in particular:
